How the Image Compressor works
- Your image is sent to our server over an encrypted connection and held in memory only.
- It’s re-encoded with the settings you chose. Phone photos are turned the right way up, and metadata is removed unless you keep it. The colour profile always stays.
- For a target size, the compressor tries quality levels until it finds the highest that fits. If even a low quality is too big, it scales the image down, then searches again. PNGs get a smaller colour palette first, which suits screenshots and graphics.
- The result comes back to your browser, and both copies are deleted from the server at that moment. You can compare before and after, then download.
If compressing would make a file bigger, which happens with images that are already well compressed, you get the original back unchanged.
Common size limits
- 20–50 KB: photos and signatures for many online application forms.
- 100–200 KB: profile pictures, job portals and email attachments.
- 500 KB – 1 MB: website images and marketplace listings.
Forms often also set pixel dimensions, such as 3.5 × 4.5 cm for passport-style photos. Check the form’s instructions; a target size here changes the file size and, only if needed, the pixel dimensions.
Sizes here count 1 KB as 1,024 bytes, the way Windows and most forms do, so a file “under 50 KB” here is under 50 KB everywhere.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an image to a specific size, like 50 KB?
Choose “Target size”, pick 50 KB (or type any size), then drop in your image. The compressor finds the highest quality that fits under that size. If the image can’t get small enough at a reasonable quality, it scales the image down until it fits. The result is always at or under the size you asked for.
Will my image lose quality?
“Balanced” keeps photos looking the same to the eye while making them much smaller, often 50–80% smaller. “Best quality” is closest to the original. “Smallest” saves the most and is fine for sharing in chats or on the web. You can compare before and after with the slider before you download.
Is my image uploaded? Is it private?
Yes, it’s uploaded to our own server, which has better encoders than a phone browser and doesn’t drain your battery. The image is held in memory, not saved to disk, and deleted the moment your browser receives the result, or after 30 minutes at the latest. We don’t look at, keep or share your images, and their names aren’t logged.
Which formats can I compress?
JPEG, PNG, WebP, AVIF and HEIC (iPhone photos), plus still GIF, BMP and TIFF. HEIC, BMP and TIFF are saved as JPEG (or PNG if they have transparency) so they open everywhere. You can also convert to WebP or AVIF, which are usually much smaller than JPEG at the same quality.
Does it remove EXIF data and location?
Yes, by default. Camera details, dates and GPS location are removed, which also makes the file smaller. The colour profile is kept so colours don’t change. Tick “Keep metadata” if you need the EXIF data.
Why is my PNG still large?
PNG is lossless, so photos saved as PNG stay large. The compressor reduces the colour palette, which works very well for screenshots, logos and graphics. For photos, choose JPEG or WebP output for a much smaller file.
Is there a limit?
Images up to 25 MB each, 20 at a time. It’s free and needs no account.
