How the PDF Compressor works
Most of a large PDF’s size is its pictures. Each one is scaled down to the chosen DPI and saved again as a JPEG, then the file’s structure is packed more tightly. Text, fonts, links and form fields aren’t touched.
Sizes count 1 MB as 1,024 KB, the way Windows and most forms do. For pictures rather than documents, use the Image Compressor.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress a PDF to a specific size, like 1 MB?
Choose “Target size”, enter the size and press Compress. The tool finds the highest quality that fits. If the PDF can’t get that small, it tells you the smallest size it can reach instead of sending back something unreadable.
Will it make my text blurry?
No. Real text stays as text, because only pictures are compressed. A scanned PDF is made of pictures of pages, so its text softens as the file shrinks; “Balanced” suits most scans.
Why didn’t my PDF get smaller?
PDFs that are mostly text are small already, and some PDFs use print colours (CMYK), which are left alone so their colours don’t shift. In those cases you get the original back.
Can it compress a password-protected PDF?
No. Remove the password first. PDFs restricted against changes are refused as well, because compressing would change them.
Do links, bookmarks and form fields survive?
Yes, they’re kept. A digital signature won’t stay valid, because any change to a signed PDF breaks it, so compress before signing.
Is my PDF uploaded? Is it private?
Yes, it’s uploaded to our own server over an encrypted connection. It’s held in memory, not saved to disk, and deleted the moment your browser receives the result, or after 30 minutes at the latest. We don’t look at, keep or share your files, and their names aren’t logged.
Is there a limit?
PDFs up to 50 MB and 2,000 pages, 10 at a time. It’s free and needs no account.
